Steam can loosen fingerprints, light grease and everyday film on compatible glass. Streak-free results depend less on producing more steam and more on controlling condensation and removing it before it dries.
Check the glass and its surroundings
Read the window or shower-enclosure care instructions. Avoid steam on damaged glass, loose films, delicate applied coatings or failing seals. Protect painted wood frames, wallpaper and moisture-sensitive sills. Extreme temperature differences can stress glass, so do not apply hot steam to very cold panes.
Prepare before adding moisture
- Dust the frame, track and sill.
- Remove grit that could scratch the glass.
- Place an absorbent cloth along the bottom edge.
- Use clean squeegee rubber and several dry microfiber cloths.
Work from top to bottom
Use a glass or squeegee attachment if your machine provides one. Make a short test pass, then work downward in overlapping strokes. Keep the tool moving and use only enough steam to soften the film. Wipe the squeegee edge after each pass so residue is not returned to the pane.
Detail the perimeter
Condensation collects near frames, corners and seals. Blot these areas with a dry cloth instead of directing more steam into them. A narrow detailing nozzle can help in compatible metal tracks, but do not aim it into gaps that lead inside a wall or insulated-glass unit.
Finish with a dry cloth
Use one cloth for wet edges and a second clean, dry cloth for the final polish. Work in broad strokes and inspect from an angle. If streaks remain, the cloth or squeegee may be carrying residue; replace or rinse it rather than adding more steam.
Common reasons for streaks
- Too much steam and uncontrolled runoff
- A dirty squeegee edge
- Cloths loaded with detergent or fabric softener
- Mineral residue from unsuitable water
- Cleaning in strong direct sun that dries the pane too quickly
LEST care note: Follow your machine’s water guidance and the glass manufacturer’s instructions. Never use a cracked attachment or damaged squeegee edge.
